Chic boutiques, fine dining and cultural attractions make this glamorous boulevard one of Miami’s favourite places to be seen.
The Miracle Mile is a popular shopping destination to pick up designer labels. The high-end retail strip also has art galleries, bars, quality restaurants and theatres. It’s located in the city of Coral Gables, which is about nine miles (15 kilometres) from downtown Miami.
The Mile, as it’s locally known, is a great place for a stroll, or just to sit under the palm trees and watch the world go by. The “walking” neighbourhood was designed in 1922 by George Merrick, Miami’s visionary city planner. His aim was to create a commercial retail district where every business would be no further than two blocks away from the main thoroughfare.
In between browsing the four blocks of The Mile, pick up some freshly baked bagels or sit down for a meal with international flavour. At night, watch musical and drama productions at the Actors’ Playhouse in the historic Miracle Theatre.
Explore further in Coral Gables, or “The City Beautiful.” Its wide streets are lined with stately homes, botanic gardens, parks and golf courses. The district’s adopted Mediterranean Revival-style architecture is clearly visible in the terra cotta colours and barrel tile roofs. Take part in events such as the fortnightly Family Day on Aragon, the seasonal Farmers Market and the annual Artisan Food Fest at the Coral Gables Museum. On the first Friday of every month, the galleries along Ponce de Leon Boulevard extend their opening hours during Gallery Night
Travel to Coral Gables from downtown Miami by Metrorail or Metrobus. The introduction of a free bus, called the Coral Gables Trolley, means the city is easy to explore without a car. This vintage bus runs frequently and brings you all the way to the Miracle Mile.
