Malate is located near to the centre of Manila. The area is highly commercialized and offers an excellent selection of hotels, restaurants, and shopping options. Malate has a multitude of affordable hotels and restaurants within six kilometres of the airport. There are few sightseeing attractions in Malate, but the Manila Zoo is in very close proximity to Malate. The Manila Zoological and Botanical Garden is home to around a thousand animals and 90 species. The zoo's most popular resident is Mali, an Asian elephant who arrived at the zoo in 1977 as an orphaned three-month old calf. Other animals at the Manila Zoo include a Bengal tiger, Malayan civet, monitor lizards, and elephants. There are a few other attractions in Malate such as the Cultural Centre of the Philippines and Bay Walk. There is also a relaxing walk and recreational area. tThe unique Villa Escudero restaurant is within one and a half kilometers of Malate.

The shops sell everything from clothing to shoes and there is also a large supermarket and food court where you will find Filipino food at a reasonable price. Malate also has a number of local shops selling local Filipino wares and crafts.
