Pure style over substance. Staff on check-in made us feel as if they were doing *us* a favour for staying there. Our room was interestingly designed but not comfortable. The sharp concrete edge of the headboard worried me about potential accidents. The room’s light switches were all over the place. A warning from the staff made us scared to touch anything in the room. The bathroom was good though. Location great.

Any artist or art lover will be in heaven here. My room was "continuum" super meditative. Bathroom was designer level. The HUGE bonus i knew nothing about before: Cherry Blossom and river view. Staff (especially Luca) were polite and gave recommendations. Book early!

Our stay at BnA was everything we were looking for and more! Aside from the unique art rooms and concepts, BnA is simply great as a hotel. Location was exactly where we wanted to be. Walking distance from Nishiki Market, shopping, across the river from Gion. We traveled with our toddler, so we did not make it to as many temples as we have in our previous trip, but location would have been perfect for it. Speaking of toddlers, because the rooms are art based, they may not be the most child friendly, but they have a crib, which is more than what we were and to find while searching for a place to stay, and it was still great for our family. The staff is exceptional and available to help us with many of our questions during our stay and assisting with our transportation inquiries. Would be happy to stay here again on our next trip and experience a new room!

Was a amazing stay. Staff was amazing guided us through the room and how to use all the features. Was best hotel we have stayed at yet in Japan. Beds were perfect for foreigners. If ever in Kyoto again will stay in another room for a whole another experience! Thank you!

This hotel is so cool and perfectly located, walking distance from everything. Above all else the staff was amazing. They helped us in planning our trip while we were still in the States and once we arrived they made everything flow. Highly recommend BnA.

Everything was great here. One thing I would point out that I'm not sure that either Expedia or the BnA website do a fantastic job of explaining (maybe just not in English) but while the hotel is an art hotel and the rooms are each art pieces, the rooms are also absurdly well appointed hotel rooms too. Like, it had everything I'd expect from a 4 star hotel, and it was an art piece you could explore. I didn't book multiple nights here (even though I had originally planned to do so) because I thought it may be lacking in some of the basic comforts I'd expect from a hotel on a long trip to a country I've never been before, but it had all of that and then some. TV? Check, even an active Netflix subscription. WiFi? Phenomenal speeds and stability. One of the best showers/non Jacuzzi style tubs I've ever use? You better believe it. And then on top of all of those things the view from the room I stayed in (EYE) was possibly one of the best I've ever had in a hotel. As I checked in the sun was setting over Kyoto, casting beautiful orange glows across the Gion neighborhood. A perfect view of the river out of the window next to the sofa. The hallway had floor to ceiling windows overlooking Kyoto including a view of the top of Kyoto tower. I won't spoil the art portion, I think that's worth experiencing for yourself, but even without the full blown gallery and art installation in the room itself this hotel was absolutely worth it.

We loved our stay here! We chose a minimalist room with a view of the river and it was so calm and relaxing. The bed and bedding were very comfortable and the bathroom was one of the best of any hotel we've stayed in. The staff were all very kind and helpful. We would definitely return!

My partner and I absolutely loved staying at BnA. We stayed in one of the artists rooms inspired by dreams and oddly enough we had some crazy ones ourselves! Not only were the staff attentive to our needs, but also provided great detailed insights to the actual artists works! The rooms were spacious, cleanly, and the bathroom was wayyyy bigger than any of our other stays which we were pleasantly surprised by. The hotel is decently close to the train stations, as well as tons of shopping districts near by. If you’re looking for an affordable, but also niche interesting stay I would highly recommend

This is a very interesting hotel for those who love contemporary art. We really enjoyed our stance here. The place is closer to the main attractions in Kyoto without being in the most noisy place in the city.

Art is Life!
Great modern hotel with an interesting aesthetic! Each room is itself a work of art. Very funky and modern. The staff all spoke excellent English and were very friendly and helpful. Highly recommended!

Arrive late evening. First got assigned a black room. Literally the wall is painted black and everything was dark except for a single light in the middle of the room. can't see anything and tripped. Request for a room changed, assigned the same theme room but wall is white painted now. great, i can see and did not trip.

My wife and I were traveling for our honeymoon. BnA double booked one night of our (prepaid) suite with some popular bloggers, kicked us out of it to a tiny room (forcing us to change rooms the next night), and then lied and claimed they had a maintenance issue. Little did they know, I knew the person they kicked us out for. They did comp the first night, but the overall issue is that they lied - even when it became clear they were lying. They also lied to Expedia to prevent Expedia from rebooking us. Be cautious when booking here.

The art exhibit was interesting and added character to the hotel. This, undoubtedly, is the draw to the hotel. While you don't get to pick the exhibit in your room, this is part of the draw (at least for the gambler in me). Very friendly staff/hosts, and a unique experience for any traveler looking for something a little different than the average.

The hotel/museum is amazing. Rooms are all different, and I imagine they're all as wild cool as ours was. We appreciated having a tablet device provided in the room instead of a television. The staircase art gallery was a delight. The staff were excellent people, and kind, the dudes we met had a good amount of English and were okay with us practicing our Japanese on them. We will definitely attempt to get back to this place in the future. There's like, 10 convenient stores in a 100 meter radius you can buy can Chu Hi at and hit the goon before you head out for an Adventure.

Artsy - but risky with kids
This art hotel is still ‘young’ for both good and bad. Some rooms have art that’s more guest-friendly than others. As rooms ordered via apps (eg hotels.com) can’t be pre selected, you might get a room like we did - a black velvet lined pitch dark room with a heavy sound installation. Luckily they had another room available to move us to so we didn’t have to suffer through our stay. The fee wasn’t reduced for the alternative room provided (though it was significantly smaller - no child bed & a shower instead of a bath), but we preferred that over for 3 nights in a darkened room. So if you’re traveling with kids - even though you can request no strobes in the order - the room you get is still a risk.

Staying at the BnA Alter Museum was a great experience. The individually designed room and access to the art exhibits made this a unique experience amongst the numerous hotels we stayed in during a long stay in Japan. The young staff were very friendly and helpful, with good English. The location is ideal and if you are looking for somewhere different to stay, I would definitely recommend it.

This is a really mixed review to write. We had a great stay at this unusual hotel - it’s really interesting and rooms are big and made to a very high spec. We were in a very dark room (painted black) - which we had no issue with given it is the artists prerogative, however, the darkness of the room showed up quite a lot of dust and dirt, which was not rectified when we left a cleaning card out after our first night. Small things were missed which mattered given the cost of the hotel - dirty cups left in the room & not replaced for example. The bathroom I must add was cleaned perfectly and was a really lovely high spec room.

Delighted with my stay
Amazing hotel and cause to support the arts. Even if you don't stay at the hotel, go see the art! Perfect quiet location just a short walk to nishiki in one direction and gion in the other. Very friendly and helpful staff, large rooms, and extremely comfortable beds. I actually added an extra night and was able to stay in the same room! Key card needed for elevator, a nice safety measure. Will absolutely stay here again when/if I'm ever in Kyoto
