The population peaks between August and December, with the best time being in August and September, for what is known as "The Gathering" as they make their pilgrimage to Minneriya, but you can see elephants the entire year!

We went to Sigiriya rock for sun rise at 7am although for us it was a little misty the view was amazing

Our experience, seeing the gathering of so many elephants was amazing, however be warned the safari vehicles are not of the standard of many other parks around the world, it was quite a long and very bumpy drive to get to the elephants and there were far too many other vehicles there. Having said all that we didn't regret doing it
