The Roten Bären hotel was perfectly situated in the old city of Freiburg! Decent breakfast buffet and friendly staff. Considered the oldest Inn in Germany. A little bit of a challenge to get to it since it’s in the pedestrian zone but managed.
Old, historic, so friendly, amazing breakfast, feels so quaint and like home but very professional and very well-run, too. Room was just a little too hot for our liking.
Oldest hotel in Germany!! Almost 800 years old and still going! It has quirks, and is nothing like a Holiday Inn, but that's a GOOD thing. Very clean, very hospitable, very quaint, and exactly in the center of old-town, just footsteps from the ancient main city gate. I loved it, and hope to return someday. Be sure to visit the little ancient basement/cellar museum.

Disliked: Staff & service, amenities
I experienced unfriendly staff and unwelcoming staff at the Hotel zum Roten Bären. Harsh, curt and rude. Somewhat shocking for a hotel that prides itself on being the oldest hotel in the Region! The room itself was spacious and light by European standards but had no coffee machine, or mini fridge. Coffee would be available downstairs on weekends at 8 a.m. and 7 a.m. during the week. During our stay it was 100 degrees in Freiburg and of course the room didn't have air conditioning. But opening the doors to the balcony meant being completely exposed to the ouside, as the balcony area was accessible by a large number of other buildings and structures surrounding it. Nonetheless we took the chance and left the doors open all night as it was too unbearably hot. Granted the high temperatures are not the hotel's fault but the staff has zero interest in hearing anything from you as a guest. There were two bottles of lukewarm water in the room. Breakfast was really good with a nice selection of cold cuts, bread, Brötchen, scrambled eggs, etc, but you have a stirn-looking lady yelling at people who were trying to get coffee, juice from the open buffee that "breakfast is available at 8:00". Mind you it was only 7:55 a.m and several groups of people had been waiting in 80+ degree temperatures for a glass of juice and water! Freiburg, however is absolutely lovely, friendly and delightful. Just stay at a different hotel.
The hotel was very cute from the street and the staff were excellent. Unfortunately, the restaurant was closed on the day we were there, so we didn’t get to try it. We were offered a room upgrade which was a pleasant surprise! The hotel does not have A/C and we were there during July, so it was very hot in the room. We also felt that the decor did not match the old world charm of the hotel’s exterior and lobby. We felt like we stepped from a beautifully historic hotel into an IKEA showroom. Overall, we enjoyed our time in Freiburg and the staff were very friendly and accommodating.
Sehr nettes Personal, tolle Lage! Im Hochsommer leider etwas eingeschränkt.
