The Baluard de Sant Jaume is one of the seven enormous bastions rising from the wall encircling the Dalt Vila district in Ibiza. Within the impressive structure, find exhibits detailing the development of military technology in the region over the centuries. Learn about the military history of the town and its island through these fascinating displays.
Get a closer look at the bombs, pistols and swords among the weapons in the exhibits. Read the informative plaques for a deeper understanding of how these armories were used in the protection of the town walls. Exhibits explain a variety of subjects including the evolution of gunpowder and the changing faces of the ramparts.
Chat with staff about the displays and pick up some of the historic lances and halberd pole weapons. Let your kids touch replica weapons, try on the armor and helmets and attempt to lift cannonballs.
Walk around the terrace of the bulwark and spot the cannons that face out toward the city. From the top of the bastion, you’ll be treated to a stunning view of the Old Town district and the dark green mountains forming a scenic backdrop. Bring binoculars and cameras to take advantage of this panoramic vantage point.
Note that the bastion’s museum, which is open to the public from spring through fall, was initiated in 2008. Visit from morning until afternoon on Tuesday through Sunday. In winter, the site opens only for group viewings organized by phone or email.
The Baluard de Sant Jaume is on the southwestern corner of the walled Old Town district of Dalt Vila in the center of Ibiza. Arrive on foot or take a bus to one of the surrounding stops. Make sure to visit other nearby attractions, such as the Capella de Sant Ciriac, the Museu Puget and the Plaza Reina Sofia.
