Akaroa Lighthouse

Akaroa which includes tranquil scenes, a sunset and a bay or harbour
For a glimpse of the history of the Banks Peninsula and an hour or two in nature, walk or ride to this historic wooden lighthouse and take in the scenic harbor views.

Situated on a rocky outcrop next to the small harbor town of Akaroa, the Akaroa Lighthouse complements an already picturesque location with its stylish white design. Enjoy views of the lighthouse on Cemetery Point from nearby coastal tracks through the hills, or walk or ride to this shining landmark from the town center.

The Akaroa Lighthouse shone its first beam out to sea on New Year's Day in 1880 from its original location on Akaroa Heads, closer to the ocean. The lighthouse remained on active duty for the next 97 years. After being replaced by an automated version, the historic lighthouse was moved to its new home at Cemetery Point to allow easier access and to preserve it for future generations.

Upon reaching Cemetery Point, admire the style of this little wooden lighthouse from the late 1870s. The lighthouse, with its shining coat of white paint, has a gorgeous backdrop. The landmark beacon is surrounded by the hills of a vast and ancient volcano to one side and the generally calm waters of Akaroa Harbour on the other. Note how the lighthouse has six sides and is mainly made of wood. Its strong planks and beams come from the country’s iconic “kauri,” the Māori word for the Agathis australis tree.

Time your visit to catch one of the volunteers from the Akaroa Lighthouse Preservation Society in attendance. They are normally there on Sundays and when cruise ships are in town however, it is recommended to check this locally before visiting. Pay the small fee to climb the stairs for panoramic harbor views. As you climb, you see the inner workings of the lighthouse tower.

The Akaroa Lighthouse is easily reached on foot from the center of town. Rent a bicycle in town for an even more enjoyable journey. Follow Beach Road and you will find the Akaroa Lighthouse perched above the sea at Cemetery Point, about a mile (1.5 kilometers) from the village center. Along the way, enjoy the sweeping views across the bay. There is a small, free car park beside the lighthouse if you arrive by car.
