Perched on Peru’s northwestern coast, this city is famed for its colonial architecture, ancient archaeological sites, beautiful beaches and colourful festivals.

Visit the Peruvian coastal city of Trujillo to discover a fascinating history set amongst beautiful beaches. Discover archaeological ruins that pre-date the Incas and historic architecture from many centuries ago.

Get a feel for Trujillo’s colonial roots in the city’s historical centre. At its heart is the grand Plaza de Armas (Parade Square), surrounded by pastel-colored buildings and the impressive yellow Trujillo Cathedral. Stroll along Francisco Pizarro Street to Plazuela El Recreo. Here, you’ll find a historic gate and fragments of the original city wall. The wall stood from the 17th to 19th centuries and served to protect the city from pirate attacks. Don’t miss Casa Ganoza Chopitea, one of Trujillo’s best-preserved colonial mansions.

Learn about Peruvian history and discover pre-Columbian art treasures at the Museo Arqueología. Examine the extensive ceramics collection at the Mueso Cassinelli and admire the rotating art exhibitions at Casa de la Emancipación.

Don’t miss a trip to Chan Chan, the biggest pre-Columbian city in the Americas, located about 6 miles (10 kilometres) from Trujillo. Marvel at the mud-brick temples and palaces built by pre-Inca cultures such as the Chimú and Moche people. Chan Chan is also home to some of South America’s most significant pyramids, including Huaca del Arco Iris and Huaca del Sol.

With warm year-round temperatures, Trujillo’s beaches are ever-popular. Make the short drive to Huanchaco, a onetime peaceful fishing village that is now a favourite hangout for backpackers and surfers.

Trujillo’s residents know how to have fun and celebrate their heritage through various festivals. Watch traditional dance performances during January’s Marinera Festival, and in October and November join the carnival-style parades that take over the streets.

Trujillo is around 350 miles (550 kilometres) north of Lima, the capital of Peru, and is well served by long-distance buses. Trujillo’s taxis are inexpensive and make exploring the city easy.
