We enjoyed our time at the property, it was clean and well run and we are certainly grateful to the host, who was lovely to us in our few interactions. We treated each other with respect, which is at the end what we expect.
This said, it was jarring to drive up and find very maga-coded political and religious banners, even those often associated with undemocratic and racist ideologies, hung up that were not part of any listing photo.
It may be the hosts see it differently and we certainly believe in everyone’s right to free speech and to worship as suits their conscience. But, it felt rather uncomfortable for us as guests to learn only after arriving AND after our non refundable fee was taken. We considered attempting to cancel anyway as my wife felt both offended and unsafe right away.
I would humbly recommend that the hosts make only one change: to better advertise their political and evangelical beliefs in their listing photos - to avoid surprise and to attract only the clientele they wish to host. This would further allow those potential guests who are uncomfortable to make choices in line with their own beliefs and express their own free speech rights without feeling offended, unsafe, or regretting their purchase. It would be great to get back to the time when we were all Americans offering hospitality to all guests regardless of who they voted for or how they worship, but if that’s not how you believe, then we ask that hosts to be clear and upfront about it.
