Aranda de Duero Travel Guide

Tourist Guide

Enjoy a holiday in Aranda de Duero, historical town with a strong tradition of making wines, and discover some of the best treasures of Spain.

Located in the largest basin of the River Duero, Aranda is a perfect combination of history and cuisine. It’s a medieval town, and its architectural treasures include the Conchuela Bridge and the Church of Santa Maria la Real, built between the 15th and 16th centuries with a flamboyant Gothic style, as well as the Church of San Juan, which today houses the Ribera Sacred Art Museum.

If you opt for one of our cheap trips to Aranda de Duero, you can relive the popular Concilio de Aranda, a council held in 1473 that dealt with the wanton lives led by some of the clergymen. You can also watch it live, as the play Aranda, 1473 is held on its streets for you to link the events with the historical settings where they took place.

Check out our package holidays in Aranda de Duero and take advantage of your stay to enjoy another of its highlights: the local wine. Aranda de Duero is one of the locations that produces Ribera del Duero Denomination of Origin wine, so be sure to visit one of its many wineries, in particular those located in the underground galleries, built between the 12th and 17th centuries with ideal conditions for wine aging.

Aranda de Duero is also known for its traditional fiestas. One highlight is Holy Week, with the august spirit and silence so typical of Castilian religious festivities, where the only sounds are the beat of the drums and the trump of trumpets. The town celebrates what is known as the “Bajada del Ángel”, or the lowering of the angel, in which a child dressed as an angel removes the Virgin’s mourning shroud so that she can gaze upon the risen Christ. As for food lovers, you mustn’t leave without tasting their roast lamb, Aranda morcilla, a variety of black pudding local to Burgos, and torta de Aranda, a traditional bread local to the town.
