Phnom Penh: Udong Mountain and Silk Island Day Tour
Phase 1: Ascending Udong Mountain
Your day begins with a comfortable morning pickup from your hotel. After an hour's drive north of the city, the landscape shifts to rolling countryside, dominated by the peaks of Udong Mountain, the former royal capital.
We will begin the ascent. Our local guide will lead you on a moderate hour-and-a-half walk winding up the ridge. Along the way, we will explore the intricate stupas, which hold the remains of Cambodia’s past monarchs. The guide will weave in the essential legends that bring these stone monuments to life. The view from the summit, looking back towards the plains and the Tonle Sap river, is breathtaking.
Phase 2: The Buddhist Centre and Park
After descending, we will move to the base of the mountain to visit one of the region's largest and most significant Buddhist centers. This expansive compound is surrounded by a sprawling park filled with mature trees and vibrant flower beds.
The centre features multiple beautiful pagodas, showcasing classic Khmer architecture. The most notable feature is the massive, serene Buddha statue that watches over the complex. The tranquility of this space, with its combination of nature and spiritual scale, provides a peaceful pause in the itinerary.
Phase 3: Silk Island Crossing and Lunch
We now head towards Silk Island. This requires another drive of about an hour, leading to a scenic ferry crossing over the Mekong River. The short ferry ride is a defining part of the journey, offering cool breezes and authentic views of river life as we approach the green banks of the island.
Upon arrival, your guide will take you directly to a unique local restaurant. These open-air eateries are set up right on the Mekong River, often on wooden platforms. You will enjoy a delicious, freshly prepared local Cambodian lunch while looking out over the water, which provides a serene and cool atmosphere.
Phase 4: Sightseeing and Silk Farming Community
After a relaxing meal, we explore the heart of Silk Island. While the entire island offers a quiet glimpse of rural life, our primary destination is the active community of the traditional silk farm.
You will spend an hour here with a specialised local guide who deeply understands the craft. They will walk you through the entire, fascinating silk production process. You will see everything: from the beginning—the silk moths laying eggs and the silkworms feeding on mulberry leaves—to the delicate boiling of the cocoons, the spinning of the raw silk thread, and finally, the intricate dyeing and weaving on traditional handlooms. It is a detailed, hands-on cultural experience.
Final Phase: Return Journey
Having explored the rich history and vibrant crafts of the region, we will begin the return journey. The trip from the island’s ferry crossing back into the heart of Phnom Penh city takes only about half an hour, bringing a smooth end to a diverse day of exploration.
