Explore the spiritual traditions of the Himalayas through a 7-day introductory shamanism retreat in Kathmandu. Your journey begins with an orientation to Himalayan shamanism, providing context for the teachings and practices you will encounter throughout the retreat. Over the following days, learn about shamanic cosmology, traditional beliefs, rituals and sacred practices while gaining an understanding of how these traditions have developed within Himalayan communities.
A key part of the retreat is learning about traditional ceremonial practices. Depending on local circumstances and permissions, you may observe traditional shamanic ceremonies and learn about the role of drums, chants, mantras and ritual objects. The experience emphasises respectful observation and learning rather than treating sacred traditions as entertainment.
The retreat also takes you beyond the classroom through guided visits to selected shrines and sacred sites around the Kathmandu Valley. Learn about their historical, cultural and spiritual significance while exploring Kathmandu's living heritage. A cultural excursion to Patan or Bhaktapur adds another perspective on the rich spiritual and artistic traditions of the valley.
Practical introductory sessions provide opportunities to explore meditation, chanting, ritual preparation and selected shamanic practices under guidance. Throughout the programme, teachings, discussions and cultural experiences are complemented by time for reflection and questions.
The retreat concludes with final teachings and a discussion with the shaman, allowing participants to reflect on what they have learned and complete the course. Accommodation, included local transport, airport transfers, learning materials and programme coordination are provided for a comfortable and structured experience.
