The Grutas of São Vicente are the largest lava caves on the island of Madeira. On this 4-hour programme you’ll visit the caves that resulted from an eruption that occurred 400 thousand years ago.
Take a guided walk to see the unusual rock formations, such as the volcanic stalactites, lava caves and other lava accumulations. The formations are made even more interesting by the dim lighting along the pathway.
The cave tour is conducted in English and Portuguese by a qualified guide who will tell you about the interesting geology of Madeira.
After the cave tour you’ll visit the Volcano Centre to see an exhibition of different volcanic stones found on the island. There is also a 3D film that explains how the island emerged from the depths of the sea.
