Mamaduwanaby: Sacred Kogi Experience in the Sierra Nevada
Discover the Heart of the World through an authentic indigenous experience
Ride a horse through the stunning landscapes of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, home to the Kogui people, guardians of one of the world's oldest living indigenous cultures and a sacred territory recognised by UNESCO for its ancestral knowledge system.
Mamaduwanaby is more than just a horseback ride. It is an authentic cultural and spiritual experience that invites you to discover the profound connection between nature, indigenous wisdom, and one of the most extraordinary sacred sites in Colombia.
Your adventure begins at 8:00 a.m. in Río Piedras. Local guides will introduce you to horseback riding and explain the cultural significance of the journey. No previous experience is required.
Ride along ancient trails, cross rivers, and climb to about 600 metres (1,970 feet) above sea level, through tropical forests and with spectacular views. Enjoy seasonal fruits and local Colombian coffee while listening to the sounds of nature. You might spot monkeys, colourful tropical birds, and the iconic toucan.
The highlight of the experience is Mamaduwanaby, an ancient sacred stone with prehistoric petroglyphs. Learn the stories behind the symbols of the three ancestral chiefs, the caiman, the heron, and the fish, and their spiritual connection to the mouth of the Piedras River, according to Kogui tradition.
The trip continues to Sierra Quindío Farm, where you'll enjoy a traditional homemade Colombian lunch before relaxing by the pool, surrounded by the peaceful mountain landscape.
The experience ends between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., leaving you with unforgettable memories and a deeper appreciation of the living heritage of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.
