What you can expect
Discover San Gimignano, a UNESCO World Heritage medieval hill town in the heart of Tuscany, surrounded by the rolling landscapes of the Val d’Elsa. Famous as the “Manhattan of the Middle Ages” for its skyline of medieval towers, the town offers one of Italy’s most authentic and atmospheric experiences. Walking through its stone streets means stepping into a living medieval world of cobblestone alleys, artisan workshops, panoramic views, and timeless Tuscan beauty.
The tour begins at Porta San Giovanni, the 13th-century gateway used by travellers arriving from Siena. Its imposing stone structure immediately introduces the medieval atmosphere of the town. From here, walk along Via San Giovanni, the high street lined with craft shops, ancient buildings, and hidden alleys that reveal authentic local life.
Along the way, admire the famous 14 remaining medieval towers, symbols of wealth and rivalry between noble families. These towers guide you towards the heart of the city: Piazza del Duomo.
Here you visit the magnificent Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta, the Duomo of San Gimignano. Inside you will find extraordinary fresco cycles depicting scenes from the Old and New Testament, the Last Judgement, and the Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian. The church is enriched by a polychrome crucifix and the stunning Chapel of Santa Fina, frescoed by Ghirlandaio, a masterpiece of the Tuscan Renaissance.
On the same square stands the Palazzo Comunale, home to the Civic Museum, recognisable for its medieval arches and historic balcony where the Podestà once addressed citizens. Next to it rises the impressive Torre Grossa, the tallest tower in San Gimignano at 54 metres, built in the early 14th century and offering one of the most iconic views over Tuscany.
Continue through the historic centre, a maze of stone towers, narrow streets, and artisan shops. Every corner opens to breathtaking views over vineyards, olive groves, and rolling hills, along the ancient Via Francigena, once travelled by pilgrims and merchants.
The experience ends in the beautiful Piazza della Cisterna, the most scenic square in San Gimignano. Named after its medieval water cistern, it features an elegant 13th-century octagonal well surrounded by noble palaces and towers, creating one of the most photographed views in Tuscany.
Here you can also visit the famous Gelateria Dondoli, known worldwide for its award-winning artisan gelato. Try local flavours such as saffron and pine nut cream or Vernaccia wine sorbet, the perfect final taste of Tuscany.
This walking tour is a journey through history, art, and authentic medieval life in one of Italy’s most iconic towns.
