What you can expect

  • Begin your adventure with a 4x4 journey to Maunga Hikurangi, the highest non-volcanic peak of the North Island. As you ascend, take in panoramic views of the Waiapu Valley and the surrounding landscapes.

Upon reaching the summit, come face to face with nine larger-than-life whakairo (carvings) that stand guard atop Maunga Hikurangi. Learn about the history and legends of the local Ngati Porou people as your expert guide brings these stories to life.

Immerse yourself in the world of Māori, back to when the demigod Maui fished up the North Island and Maunga Hikurangi was the first point to emerge from the sea. Participate in a karakia (traditional Māori blessing) and gain a deeper understanding of the local culture and customs.

Enjoy a light lunch amidst the stunning natural surroundings before making your way back down the mountain.
