What you can expect
Journey through the history of the slave trade in Brazil and the African descendants of Rio de Janeiro on a heritage walking tour, and learn about human trafficking perpetrated by the Portuguese for over 380 years. See historically relevant sites in the company of an expert guide of African descent from Rio de Janeiro.
Find out more about the arrival of enslaved Africans to the city, and hear about their lives and cultural legacies. Visit the main sites of African heritage in city centre Rio, including Largo São Francisco da Prainha and Praça Mauá. Hear the storey of Valongo Warf, where millions of Africans arrived to be sold as slaves at the biggest slave market of the Atlantic.
Visit Pedra do Sal (Rock of Salt) area known as the birthplace of samba for the musicians who would meet to sing and dance there, the Pedra do Sal is considered the centre of “Little Africa” and was the site of the earliest Carnival bloco parties and parades. The tradition continues today, with lively rodas de sambas every week.
Also leran about the origins of afrobrazilian religions and their sincretism with the christian religions.
