The hike will start just below Vernazza station, in front of the Azienda Agricola La Bottega shop. From there, we will visit the old village (with its small square overlooking the sea and the distinctive Church of Santa Margherita d'Antiochia), and then we will set off along the Verde Azzurro trail towards Monterosso, following the ancient pedestrian route connecting the two villages. The route will wind through the distinctive terraced landscape of the Cinque Terre, where over the course of about a thousand years, human labour has profoundly altered the steep slopes of the hills overlooking the sea in order to create small horizontal strips of land (the terraces, or “cian” in the local language) supported by thousands of kilometres of dry-stone walls. For centuries, vines have been grown mainly on the terraces for the production of prestigious wines such as Cinque Terre and Sciacchetrà, both DOC wines. Along the route, we will also be able to admire beautiful views, especially of the villages of Vernazza and Monterosso and the entire coast of the Cinque Terre. In about 20–30 minutes, we will arrive at the beautiful lemon grove of the La Bottega Farm in the hamlet of Mavà, where the view of the village of Vernazza is sublime and where we will have our food tasting featuring limoncino (made with the lemons that will surround us) and focaccia. For those who wish, we will also offer our liqueurs made with ingredients from the farm's land, which was reclaimed after being abandoned, as well as a typical white wine from the Cinque Terre. For children, local, zero-food-miles juices will be offered instead.
