What you can expect

  • This guided tour lasts 6 hours from 10am to 4pm including Cable Car, Big Buddha, Po Lin Monastery, Kwun Yam Temple, Tai O stilt house visit, Boat ride at Tai O. This tour finishes at Tung Chung MTR station.

    Meet your guide at Tung Chung MTR station, where you will learn about the development of Lantau Island: how it connects to the old Kai Tak airport and how the construction of the new airport transformed the livelihoods of the island's indigenous population.

    Take a 20-minute cable car ride with panoramic views of the Hong Kong International Airport and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. On a clear day, you may even see China and Macao on the horizon!

    Bypassing the tourist-oriented Ngong Ping Village, the tour officially begins at the front door of Po Lin Monastery. Here, you will discover how Chinese Buddhist architectural styles reflect the religion's core beliefs.

    Following a photo session at the base of the Big Buddha, you will ascend the 268 steps to reach the top. At the top, your guide will explain the meaning behind the Buddha's hand gesture and the engineering challenges faced during its construction. You will also have the opportunity to view a sacred relic and learn about its significance.

    Back at the monastery entrance, your guide will share the remarkable storey of how Po Lin Monastery overcame financial hardship, growing its assets from just 14 dollars to 1.3 billion Hong Kong dollars today.

    After a lunch break at Po Lin Monastery, you will take a private taxi to Kwun Yum Temple—a hidden sanctuary virtually untouched by tourism. Here, you will learn why monks historically chose Lantau as a religious refuge and how this temple contrasts with the bustling Po Lin Monastery. Depending on time, you may also participate in a religious ritual and a short meditation inside the temple.

    A second taxi transfer brings you to Tai O fishing village, where you will discover why this unique fishermen village was established and why its iconic stilt houses were built. You will visit a local fisherman's stilt house and walk through it to gain a first-hand understanding of traditional village life.
