Overview

  • A personally narrated walking tour of Graz: Ten main stops and twelve detailed walking chapters connect the Main Square, Herrengasse, Landhaushof, and Franciscan Monastery with the Mur, Kunsthaus, Murinsel, Schloßberg, and Stadtkrone. Around 93 minutes through a city that connects power, everyday life, and new ideas behind facades, in courtyards, and on surprisingly short paths. You start when you want and go at your own pace – the audio tour runs directly in your smartphone's browser, completely without an app download. GPS points automatically start the stories exactly where you are standing.

Activity itinerary

Hauptplatz (Pass by)

Starting point of the tour: Town hall and Archduke Johann Fountain on the main square, the civic centre of Graz with market stalls, trams, and city history since the 12th century.

Luegghaeuser (Pass by)

The viewing house on the corner of Hauptplatz/Sporgasse: Those who look closely discover hidden faces on the facade – a first hint that Graz likes to look back.

Landhaushof (Pass by)

The State Armoury is the largest preserved historical armoury in the world and commemorates the defence of Styria; we view the building and surroundings from the outside.

Franziskanerkloster Graz (Pass by)

The Franciscan monastery with cloister and quiet monastic atmosphere in the middle of the old town; the courtyard and church may be closed at times, the stories also work from the outside.

Kunsthaus Graz (Pass by)

The Kunsthaus Graz, the blue "Friendly Alien" from 2003, sets a confident modern counterpoint to the historic old town; we view it from the outside.

Island in the Mur (Pass by)

The Murinsel, a walkable steel structure in the middle of the Mur from 2003, connects the two banks and is a landmark of modern Graz.

Schlossberg (Pass by)

The Schloßbergplatz at the foot of the Schloßberg with entrance, lift, and railway: The former fortress hill is today a park, viewpoint, and landmark of the city.

Cathedral (Domkirche) (Pass by)

The Grazer Cathedral, the late Gothic court church of Kaiser Friedrich III, stands right next to the mausoleum and the castle and shows how closely faith and rule were connected in Graz.

Burg Graz, Doppelwendeltreppe (Pass by)

The Graz Castle with the famous Gothic double spiral staircase: two stairs that wind around each other without ever meeting – a symbol of imperial architecture in Graz.

Karmeliterplatz (Pass by)

The Carmelite Square with the imperial city crown and the Palais Saurau: Here the circle closes before going back to the main square.
