What is PADI Discover Scuba Diving?
PADI Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) is a fun and easy introduction to the underwater world—no prior experience needed. It’s not a certification course but a supervised, first-time scuba diving experience led by a certified PADI Professional. It’s perfect for beginners who want to try scuba diving before committing to a full certification.
⸻
Who Can Join?
• Ages 10 and up
• Reasonably comfortable in water
• No previous scuba experience required
• Basic health and fitness (you’ll complete a short medical form)
⸻
What to Expect:
The DSD experience typically lasts a few hours and includes three main parts:
- Introduction & Safety Briefing:
Learn basic scuba theory, hand signals, and safety guidelines. Your instructor will explain how your gear works and what to expect underwater. - Shallow Water Practice:
In a confined water area, you’ll practice essential skills like:
• Breathing underwater
• Clearing a regulator and mask
• Equalising pressure - Open Water Dive:
After the confined water session you will head out on a real dive (up to 12 metres/40 feet) under close supervision. You’ll explore coral reefs, marine life, and get a true taste of the diving experience.
⸻
What’s Included:
• Full gear rental (mask, fins, wetsuit, regulator, tank, etc.)
• Supervision and instruction by a certified PADI Instructor
• Short theory session and confined water training
• open water dive
⸻
Time Commitment:
• Usually 2–4 hours
⸻
What You’ll Learn:
• How to breathe and move underwater
• How to communicate with hand signals
• How to stay safe and comfortable while diving
• What it feels like to be weightless and underwater
⸻
Can It Lead to Certification?
Yes! If you love the experience, it can count towards the PADI Open Water Diver certification—your first full scuba certification. Ask your instructor about how to continue your scuba journey.
⸻
Why Try It?
• Safe, supervised experience
• Discover marine life up close
• No long-term commitment
• Ideal for holiday or as a bucket-list activity
⸻
Quick Tips:
• Bring a swimming costume, towel, and sun cream
• Avoid alcohol before diving
• Don’t fly within 18 hours after scuba diving
• Relax and have fun—your instructor is there to help every step of the way
⸻
