What you can expect

  • Begin your walk at the old main entrance on Aachener Straße, where you’ll step into over 200 years of history. As you wander the peaceful paths, stop at the graves of important people in Cologne's history. A lot of them cared even about Carnival, Cologne's 5th season.

How did the polymath Ferdinand Franz Wallraf manage to make burials at Melaten ‘appealing’ to the people of Cologne? How did he and other prominent Cologne figures establish Carnival among high society? Today, everyone who carries any weight in politics, business or culture is a member of one of the many Carnival societies. And today, many pay a fortune to be buried at Melaten Cemetery.

An entertaining stroll through history and traditions, including those of Carnival.
