On April 3, 1853, the Unterlinden Museum officially opened its doors. It displays works of art such as the 3rd-century mosaic discovered in Bergheim in 1848, the Issenheim Altarpiece and the Dominican Altarpiece by Martin Schongauer, which came from the revolutionary seizure of property.
Today, the Unterlinden Museum offers its many visitors dialogue and knowledge, emotion and pleasure. It offers a tour covering nearly 7,000 years of history, from prehistory to 21st-century art.
This journey through time, at the heart of the collections of archaeology, fine arts, history, and society, allows visitors to discover the multiple facets of the museum's architecture, unified and magnified by the redevelopment and extension by architects Herzog & de Meuron, completed in 2015.
As visitors walk through the halls of the former 13th-century convent, the old Municipal Baths inaugurated in 1906, and the contemporary spaces built in 2015, as well as the museum's collections, they can see the successive stages of a history spanning more than 170 years.
The museum team welcomes you and accompanies you on your visit, whether it is self-guided or guided, and whether you are alone, with family, or with friends.
For half an hour or half a day, the Unterlinden Museum is yours.
