What you can expect
This private guided tour takes place in Chania and lets you explore a vast portion of our great mountain range, The White Mountains of Crete. In this private excursion, you can see, feel, and interact with locals, and eventually find out why the White Mountains of Crete and their highest peaks are so crucial for hikers, mountaineers and tourists who like adventure and exploration:
This mountain tour in Crete is for everyone, as we start from the lowlands*, and head to the highlands!
Our tour starts from sea level, where we get to see the vast areas that this tour about the mountains of Chania will eventually cover. A short while after the start, we hop on a private organic farm to collect some organic fruits for the day. The elevated position of this farm offers us the opportunity to see the mountain range that divided the Cretan North from the South.
As we start ascending, we pass through a gorge of impeccable beauty: A stop for photographs and storytelling will remind us of the significance of the White Mountains of Crete during bad times, hardships and history, especially during wars. A stop at a war resistance museum, devoted to one of the most famous political figures of Greece will explain how the geology of Crete defended the island, and how important those Creeks and passages were in times of revolt, and war.
After a short break for coffee in a picturesque mountainous village full of Cretan Shepherds, we head to the picturesque region of Omalos famous for its mountainous climate and its hospitable people. We continue ascending, seeking mountain peaks and admiring the White Mountains.
Our certified guide with hiking experience describes to us the tallest peaks of the mountains of Crete while we are heading to a traditional old-school restaurant for an authentic Cretan Cuisine lunch. This restaurant run by a shepherd family will entice us to the traditional Cretan cuisine.
Full of memories, we continue to reach this private guided full-day tour’s highest point. As we head to approach the Plateau of Omalos and the entrance of Samaria Gorge we reach an altitude of approximately 1400 metres.
We stand aroused as the clear air and the snow (if you book the tour during wintertime) change the scenery completely in contrast to the valleys of the lowlands we saw at the beginning of this full-day tour. Full of memories we take the long way back to the valleys and lowlands of Chania through dizzy desolate roads back to modern city life!
