What you can expect

Escape Auckland for a full day of unforgettable Middle-earth magic, Māori culture, and incredible geothermal landscapes. This small-group adventure combines two of New Zealand’s most iconic attractions—Hobbiton Film Set and Te Puia—with a scenic journey through the beautiful Waikato and Central North Island countryside.

Your day begins with pickup in a comfortable, modern minibus before travelling south through the lush Waikato countryside, one of New Zealand’s most productive farming regions. Along the way, enjoy sweeping views of rolling green hills, mountains, farmland, and rural landscapes, with plenty of opportunities to spot sheep and other farm animals.

Arrive at Shire’s Rest, the gateway to Hobbiton Film Set. Board the iconic green Hobbiton bus and travel into the heart of the Shire for a fully guided 2.5-hour tour of the famous 12-acre film set.

Follow your expert Hobbiton guide through the lush landscapes of Middle-earth, where you'll discover 44 unique Hobbit holes, colourful gardens, the Mill, and the famous Green Dragon Inn. Hear fascinating stories and behind-the-scenes secrets about the making of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films, and immerse yourself in the magic of the Shire. Your experience concludes with a complimentary drink at the Green Dragon Inn.

From Hobbiton, continue south towards Rotorua, travelling through the distinctive town of Tirau, famous for its creative corrugated iron sculptures, and across the scenic Kaimai Ranges. Take in the changing landscapes as you journey towards Rotorua's bubbling mud pools, steaming vents, and volcanic landscapes.

In Rotorua, discover the geothermal and cultural wonders of Te Puia. Explore the geothermal valley with your guide and witness the incredible Pōhutu Geyser, the largest active geyser in the Southern Hemisphere, as it erupts into the sky. See steaming geothermal pools, bubbling mud, volcanic craters, and traditional Māori architecture while learning about the deep cultural heritage of the area.

Visit the National Māori Arts School, where traditional Māori carving and weaving are kept alive and passed down through generations. You may also have the opportunity to see one of New Zealand's most elusive native birds, the kiwi, in the dedicated Kiwi Conservation Centre.

After a day filled with cinematic landscapes, Māori culture, and extraordinary geothermal wonders, relax and enjoy the scenic journey back to Auckland with your guide.
