Please note: this is a long-distance day trip of around 8 hours through the hill country. It suits travellers who want an authentic local experience rather than a rushed coach tour.

Choose your vehicle: an open-air Tuk-Tuk for up to 3 guests, or an air-conditioned mini-van for up to 5. Either way the vehicle is yours alone, with one English-speaking driver-guide for the whole day and hotel pickup inside Kandy.

Two ways to book. All-Inclusive options have the Ambuluwawa Tower and Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage tickets pre-paid, so you walk straight in with nothing to pay on the day. Transport & Driver Only options cost less, and you buy your own tickets at each gate (Pinnawala approx $18, Ambuluwawa approx $8). Same route, same vehicle, same driver-guide.

Your day begins with a pickup from your Kandy hotel. Your first stop is the Ambuluwawa Tower, a white spiral tower rising above a biodiversity complex near Gampola. Climb as high as you feel comfortable for views over the surrounding mountains and tea country. The final section is a narrow spiral staircase, so you can stop at a lower level and still enjoy the view.

Next, visit Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage to observe these gentle giants from a respectful distance, and watch the herd walk down to the river from the public viewing area. There is no riding and no contact.

You are back in Kandy in the evening, dropped at the same hotel we collected you from.

Practical notes: bottled water is provided. Shoulders and knees should be covered at religious sites, so a light scarf or sarong is worth carrying. Lunch is not included, and your driver-guide will stop wherever you like. Tell him at pickup if you want longer anywhere or would rather skip a stop, and the day is rearranged around you.
