Overview

With Samurai Guide Sho, a former JR Chuo Line conductor who worked on trains for 22 years, travel comfortably from Shinjuku by JR Chuo Line Green Car (premium seating) and enjoy a train journey through distinctive local craft beer taprooms in Western Tokyo, an area not shaped by mass tourism.

Leaving crowded central Tokyo behind, you will likely be surprised by this quieter side of Tokyo, with very few travellers and local taprooms still keeping their area atmosphere.

At each taproom, you can bring in your favourite food purchased outside. One of the charms of this journey is freely pairing craft beer with food you buy in the streets of Western Tokyo.

As you travel from town to town by train, enjoy the scenery from the window. Each time you step into a town and taste a glass of beer, the scenery, the atmosphere, and the character of the beer change.

No beer expertise is required. What matters is slowly enjoying the atmosphere and time of each place with a local beer in hand.

Know before you book

  • Public transport options are available nearby
  • Infants are required to sit on an adult’s lap
  • Not recommended for pregnant travellers
  • Not recommended for travellers with poor cardiovascular health
  • Suitable for all physical fitness levels
  • This tour is independently operated and is not affiliated with JR East.
  • The return train fare, including Green Car, is about ¥3,000. Please have enough balance on your Suica card or bring cash.
  • If you use only Suica in Apple Wallet, you cannot purchase a Suica Green Car ticket, so you will need to buy a paper Green Car ticket with cash. This costs ¥260 more than the Suica Green Car fare. For a smoother and more economical Green Car experience, a physical Suica card is recommended.
  • If you are not sure how to top up your Suica card, I will guide you at the start of the tour.
  • This tour uses JR Green Car premium seating for the train ride both ways.
  • The Green Car has seat tables, drink holders, power outlets, a bathroom, and trash bins, so you can enjoy your own lunch, snacks, or drinks on board, and it is also convenient for charging your phone or other devices.
  • Since this tour starts at 12:00, some guests choose to have lunch on the outbound Green Car train ride.
  • After arriving at the nearest station to each taproom, you can also buy food, drinks, or light snacks to pair with craft beer if needed. Credit cards are accepted. The items you purchase can be brought into the taprooms I guide you to.
  • If you have dietary restrictions, please contact me before or at the time of booking. Availability of suitable options depends on the details.
  • This is not a detailed brewery or brewing facility tour, but a tour where you visit selected taprooms in West Tokyo and enjoy fresh craft beer on tap in the local atmosphere of each area.
  • If you purchase takeaway beer, you can enjoy it comfortably in the Green Car premium seating on the return train while watching the city views pass by from the window.
  • The organiser is not responsible for illness, injury, or loss or damage of personal belongings during the tour.
  • While the guide takes great care to ensure safety throughout the tour, guests are responsible for managing their own condition and personal safety, especially when consuming alcohol.
  • The tour may be terminated without refund in case of disruptive behaviour.
  • The guide travels to the meeting point by train. Due to train delays or service suspensions on the day of the tour, the guide may not be able to arrive exactly at the scheduled meeting time. In that case, the guide will contact you as soon as possible and adjust the itinerary with safety as the top priority.
  • If there are major train delays or service suspensions from Shinjuku, arrival at the craft beer taprooms may be delayed. In that case, the order of visits or the time spent at each taproom may be adjusted according to the situation on the day.

Activity itinerary

Shinjuku Southern Terrace

  • 5m
The tour begins at JR Shinjuku Station. Samurai Guide Sho, a former JR East train conductor who served on the JR Chuo Line for about 22 years until March 31, 2026, will guide you smoothly through the complex station and assist with purchasing Green Car tickets. The journey begins before you even arrive at the first taproom. You will board the JR Chuo Line Green Car (premium seating) and travel west towards Western Tokyo. The train ride itself is an essential part of this experience. As the scenery gradually changes outside the window, the journey builds anticipation for the craft beer waiting ahead in Western Tokyo.

Tokyo

  • 4h 50m
After stepping off the train, you will visit multiple craft beer taprooms along the JR Chuo Line in Western Tokyo, carefully selected by Samurai Guide Sho as the best options for the day. The exact route may vary depending on opening hours, seat availability, the pace of the group, and the best taproom options on the day. This tour is about tasting locally brewed craft beer in the areas where it is made. At each stop, you can enjoy a freshly poured beer from the tap while discovering the different atmosphere and character of each place. The movement from one taproom to the next is also part of the journey. As you walk through the area and notice the changing atmosphere, the scenery, mood, and impression of the beer shift little by little. Rather than simply visiting bars, this tour lets you experience the flow of Western Tokyo itself.

Suica's Penguin Park

  • 5m
After visiting the taprooms, you will return to Shinjuku Station by JR Chuo Line Green Car (premium seating). If you purchase takeaway craft beer, you can enjoy it from the comfort of your Green Car seat while looking out at the Western Tokyo scenery and the areas where the beer was brewed. The return ride is not just transport. It becomes a time to look back on the areas you visited, the beer you tasted, and the changing scenery along the Chuo Line. This tour is not just about drinking craft beer. It is a small train journey with a former JR train conductor, taking you along the Chuo Line to experience a quieter and less familiar side of Tokyo, slightly away from the usual tourist areas.
