Saarbrücken is a city of contrasts: a perfect mixture of the French joie de vivre with the seriousness and work ethic of the Germans makes this small town a perfect stop for any tourist. Although heavily industrialised in the 18th century, Saarbrücken still reveals some of the most interesting parts of its impressive history of over 1000 years: Wonderful baroque buildings, a special and very enjoyable Old Town and many more.
See the Basilica St Johann, a perfect example of 18th-century Baroque beauty. The highlights of this church are the bronze portal, the entrance area and its very famous 4,312-pipe organ. Pass the local City Hall, a very impressive neo-Gothic building dominated by its 54-meter tower, from which the carillon sounds daily, designed by the same architect that created the town halls in Munich and Wiesbaden. Take a look at Saarbrücken Castle, first mentioned in the year 999 under the name “Castellum Sarabrucca”. If you are looking for a quiet little town with a flavour to it, then Saarbrücken is the perfect place for your quest.
