What you can expect

  • Experience two of Rotorua’s most iconic adventures in one unforgettable combo – White Water Rafting on the Kaituna River and a guided journey to the summit of Mt Tarawera.

On the Kaituna River, your expert guide will lead you through a spectacular landscape of steep, native bush-clad canyons, 14 rapids and three waterfalls – including the world-famous 7-metre Tūtea Falls. Along the way, experience the thrill of Grade 5 white water while learning about the cultural significance of the awa and our connection to the environment through kaitiakitanga – guardianship and protection of the land and waterways. A professional adventure photographer will capture the action along the way.

Your Mt Tarawera experience takes you on a completely different adventure. Travel by 4x4 through native bush and rugged off-road terrain towards the crater, with your guide sharing stories of the 1886 eruption, the surrounding landscape and the cultural significance of the maunga.

From the trailhead, explore Mt Tarawera on foot across unique volcanic terrain, with spectacular views across the Rotorua region and beyond. The walk includes uneven terrain, steep sections and loose scoria, so a reasonable level of fitness and mobility is required.

At the summit, take in incredible 360-degree panoramic views before descending into the volcanic crater. For those who are comfortable, there is the option to experience the famous scree run – or take it at your own pace and walk the descent.

Together, these two experiences combine adrenaline, incredible landscapes, local stories and a deeper connection to the whenua, awa and people of this special part of Aotearoa.

Please note: This combo consists of two separately timed activities rather than one continuous tour. If using our complimentary central Rotorua transport, you will be returned to your pickup location after your first activity and collected again for your second. If self-driving, each activity has a different meeting point.

Complimentary transport is available from selected central Rotorua accommodation and the Rotorua Information Centre. Please request transport when booking and check your booking portal or messages prior to your experience for your confirmed pickup and departure times.
