What you can expect

  • This day trip (depending on sea tides) combines experiences at Prison Island and the nearest sandbank, known as Nakupenda Sandbank, followed by a Stone Town walking tour.

    You will cruise on a wooden boat, or sometimes a dhow (depending on numbers), from the shore of Stone Town to Prison Island and then Nakupenda Sandbank.

    During these hours, you will visit all of these unique places.

    You will start by exploring Prison Island. Our tour guide will share some history of this incredible island, and then you will have time to see the giant tortoises and take photos with them.

    These are the second-biggest turtles in the world after those of the Galapagos. They are an Aldabra species originally from Seychelles.

    After some time at Prison Island, you will head to Nakupenda Sandbank. Get prepared to swim and sunbathe, and taste mouth-watering tropical fruits with a delicious seafood lunch.

    We will provide you with snorkelling gear (masks and flippers) at Nakupenda Sandbank so you can enjoy some snorkelling, although there are just corals and not many fish.
