  • 2h
Meet your host at Sylhet Railway Station, easily found on Google Maps and identified by our Charubala Homestay & Tours signboard. Begin the scenic two-hour journey towards Juri, passing tea estates, rural villages, wetlands and farmlands — the countryside already stirring with the excitement of Durga Puja, as decorated pandals and festival preparations come into view along the way, building anticipation for the celebrations ahead at Charubala Homestay.

Charubala Homestay

  • 4h
Arrive at Charubala Homestay and receive a traditional welcome from our Hindu family, who will welcome you as one of their own. Enjoy naru and other homemade sweets prepared for Durga Puja before settling into your simple private room for a short rest. We then serve a traditional vegetarian Bengali lunch, reflecting our family’s customs during the festival. Afterwards, join your host for a gentle walk through the neighbourhood, meet local residents and experience the festive atmosphere taking shape around the village. Return to the homestay to prepare for the evening temple visit, located only a five-minute walk away.

  • 4h
Walk with your host to the village temple as families and neighbours gather for the evening celebration. During Durga Puja, women traditionally wear sarees, while men often wear panjabis, a traditional Bengali kurta. Festival clothing is optional, but guests who would enjoy this tradition can let us know in advance, and we will be happy to help arrange it. At the temple, observe Puja rituals, prayers and offerings while your host explains their meaning and the customs followed by local families. Spend time with the community and experience the decorations, music, lights and shared emotions that make the festival meaningful. Depending on the temple programme, enjoy cultural activities and take part in Sylheti damail—a traditional group dance performed with singing, rhythmic clapping and gentle circular movements. The evening concludes with a simple vegetarian festival meal shared with the community before returning to Charubala Homestay for the night.

Day 2: Durga Puja Across Rural Villages, Tea Gardens and Indigenous Communities

After breakfast at our family home, we leave around 8:00 AM in a traditional local van, commonly used for travelling between villages. It is Vijaya Dashami, the final day of Durga Puja, and the morning carries a different feeling as communities prepare to say farewell to Goddess Durga. The journey also offers a close view of rural Bangladesh as we pass ponds, paddy fields, bamboo groves, village homes and small local markets, seeing how people live, travel and gather during the festival. We stop at several village Puja mandaps and spend time with the communities around them. The idols, decorations, offerings, music and farewell preparations differ from village to village. Your host introduces you to local people and explains what is happening, allowing you to experience both Durga Puja and rural village life as they naturally come together.

Around midday, we continue to a nearby tea-garden community, where Durga Puja is closely connected with local family and community life. Walk through the settlement, visit the Puja mandap and spend time with residents as they gather for the final day of the festival. Your host explains the customs followed here and the everyday life of families living around the tea garden. We then visit a Manipuri village, home to an Indigenous Hindu community with its own language, clothing and cultural traditions. Meet community members and observe how they celebrate Durga Puja while preserving their distinct identity. The visit concludes with a traditional vegetarian lunch shared with the community, offering time for conversation and a warm pause before returning to Juri for the evening farewell rituals.

Return to the main village temple near Charubala Homestay before evening, as families gather for the final prayers and farewell to Goddess Durga. Observe the rituals and emotions shared by people who have celebrated together throughout Puja. Women guests who wish may take part in Sindoor Khela with guidance from local women. In this Bengali tradition, vermilion is offered to the Goddess and then shared among women as a sign of blessing, joy and goodwill. Join the community for music, drumming and traditional dance before following the Bisorjon procession to the place of immersion. This farewell is both joyful and emotional, carrying the hope that Goddess Durga will return the following year. Afterwards, return to the temple to receive Shanti Jol, blessed water shared as a symbol of peace, and exchange Bijoya greetings. Share a simple vegetarian dinner with the community before walking back to Charubala Homestay and bringing the day to a quiet close.

Day 3: A Quiet Village Morning and Farewell from Charubala

Begin the final morning with a relaxed breakfast at our family home, followed by a short walk through the neighbourhood. The village feels quieter after the celebrations, giving you time to greet familiar faces once more and observe everyday life continuing after the festival. Return to Charubala Homestay to pack, sit with the family and share your thoughts from the journey. The farewell is simple and personal, just as the welcome was on the first day. Although the stay ends here, guests leave as part of the Charubala family and will always be warmly welcomed back.
