What you can expect

  • Montmartre was the place where artists came when they could not afford to live anywhere else. Picasso, Modigliani, Toulouse-Lautrec: they shared studios on the Butte and ate in the same brasseries and bars that still exist today.

This tour climbs through the neighborhood over three hours with eight food stops and the art history woven into the walk. At Alexine, an organic artisan bakery, you start with a fresh baguette and a seasonal pastry. At La Mascotte, operating in its Belle Époque room since 1889, four oysters from four French regions arrive with a glass of white wine. Between stops: the Bateau-Lavoir where Picasso painted Les Demoiselles d'Avignon, the vineyard that has produced Montmartre wine since 1933, and the rosette salami that Boucherie Jacky Gaudin makes from pigs raised within 150 kilometers of Paris.

At Le Saint Jean, aligot, the Aveyron dish of mashed potato stretched with fresh cheese until it pulls like a ribbon, served with sausage beside the church that gives the bar its name. Fromagerie la Butte Fromagere follows with French PDO cheeses, then Alain Ducasse's chocolate shop for a praline cookie and hazelnut spread, a limoncello tasting and more at a Sicilian lemon shop, and a Pierre Hermé macaron at the top of the hill with all of Paris below.

Come and eat your way through the neighborhood that fed a generation of artists!
