Tiger's nest

Tiger's Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang) Tiger's Nest Monastery, locally known as Paro Taktsang, is Bhutan's most iconic and sacred Buddhist monastery, dramatically perched on a cliff about 900 metres (2,950 feet) above the Paro Valley at an elevation of 3,120 metres (10,240 feet). According to legend, Guru Padmasambhava (Guru Rinpoche) flew to this site on the back of a tigress in the 8th century to meditate and subdue evil spirits, giving the monastery its famous name. The monastery complex, originally built in 1692, consists of beautifully decorated temples, prayer halls, meditation caves, and stunning viewpoints overlooking the valley. Reaching Tiger's Nest requires a scenic 4–6 hour return hike through fragrant pine forests adorned with colourful prayer flags. Along the way, visitors can stop at the Taktsang Cafeteria for panoramic views before continuing to the monastery.
