Vintgar Gorge is a picturesque valley and stream surrounded by varied plant life and charming wooden walkways built into the cliffs. The water is transparent, showcasing the colorful, scenic terrain. Stroll along the winding paths that follow the misty trail of the Radovna River.

Note how the water changes from blue to green in different sections along the stream. Capture photos of the mossy cliffs that loom over the water. Encounter the waterfalls, whirlpools and rapids of this 1-mile (1.6-kilometer) gorge that carves through the Hom and Bort hills.

Among the highlights is the Šum Waterfall, which flows from a height of 42 feet (13 meters). Watch the impressive feat of nature from the wooden bridge facing it. A small hydroelectric power plant makes use of the waterfall to generate electricity.

Climb to the single-arch stone bridge of the Bohinj Railway that dates back to 1906. It crosses the gorge from above, offering a spectacular view of the stream, trail and dam. Capture photos of the scenic region from the center of the bridge.

Hike through the intriguing terrain that surrounds the gorge. Relax with a picnic among the beech trees and enjoy the sound of rushing water. The origin of Vintgar’s name is uncertain, although it has been suggested it relates to the nearby vineyards.

Pay the admission fee at the entrance hut and get discounts for kids and toddlers. The gorge park is open daily from morning to evening between April and November. It can get fairly crowded in the afternoon. Facilities including bathrooms and a restaurant stand at both ends of the gorge.

Drive north from Bled for 3 miles (5 kilometers) to reach the Vintgar Gorge. Part of the Radovna Valley, it is just north of the villages of Podhom and Spodnje Gorje. Leave the car in the parking lot beside the entrance hut.

€10 per person entry fee plus €5 parking was excessive, so we used the public (free) footpath which misses the gorge but still allows you to visit the waterfall at the top of the gorge.
