location was wonderful - if you like to be surrounded by water and in a quiet area this is perfect. would have liked a few more options for food that was low fat and healthy and a little less costly, but that may be the norm these days in CA. overall - would return, room is comfortable and access to view and water is wonderful!

We were so looking forward to staying here based on the reviews we read. Location is fabulous and surrounding areas also. Room on the other hand was completely substandard. Bathroom was old and lacking in maintenance (gross red stains on the tub tile); Balcony door did not even lock properly with the deadbolt; beds squeaked; furniture was old and chipped; coffee machine was filthy and even when I tried to use it to boil bottle water for some instant coffee it was disgusting; TV access was turned off hours before checkout time. The only reason I give it 3 stars is because of the location - otherwise it would've been 1 star. I don't know what rooms people are staying in who are writing 5 star reviews, but it definitely wasn't a room like ours. So disappointed and excessively expensive for what you get.

I love that it’s at the very end of the island so not a lot of cars pass through the property. Food options are great as well. But to be honest, food at the restaurant was way better. My husband and I regretted getting breakfast for two days somewhere else that week instead of at the hotel restaurant.

Kona Kai was absolutely beautiful! It was conveniently located for my parents and I to enjoy our trip back home. The rooms were beautiful and clean. If you book, i highly recommend being the marina view... it does not disappoint morning, noon, or night!!!

The property is located on Shelter Island which is absolutely beautiful. You cannot beat the location. You can sit on your patio and watch small boats and large ships come and go through the bay. There is a beautiful grass area with a walking path right across the street that even has a small beach area. The scenery is amazing. When we booked our rooms, we asked that they be connecting. When we arrived to check in, we were told 1 room was on the 1st floor and 1 room was on the 2nd floor. Staff was able to get us 2 rooms on the first floor down the hall and around the corner from each other but it’s not the experience we were hoping for. Unfortunately our room was a little less than we expected. Our refrigerator did not work for the first two days and everything we put it in went bad. Staff responded but had to come out twice before it actually started working again. Our patio light was missing a lightbulb the entire stay and although there is a thermostat on the wall, the property has no central air in the rooms. Our wall AC unit did not cool sufficiently but did make the room incredibly humid so that towels would not dry. Maid service was around 5 pm each day and one day we had to call because they did not come at all. You cannot beat the location and scenery however, we were very disappointed overall.

The area for the property is clean and nice, at the quiet end of Shelter Island. It's mostly a property for members and marina/yacht people. There's a nice walk along the waterfront across the street, with a small beach farther down. The back side of the property is mostly along a marina. There's bonfire pits, a couple of pools. It's mostly meant for adults. I attended yoga one morning, but I was the only "guest" -- the rest were property members of 50 years and up. There is a restaurant on site -- no room service, but you can call ahead and walk down to pick up. The food was very good. There is a spa, but you might have to call the office a couple weeks in advance to find out how to book spa services because there were no weekend slots by the time I checked into my room on Friday afternoon. In spite of all these pluses, we found ourselves constantly asking questions of the staff -- who are nice, by the way. Parking didn't work (which is $45/night, ouch), so we had multiple calls and questions about how to get access and how to leave the property. We were charged $200 extra in incidentals in advance ($100/night), and we had to ask when it would be returned to our account and why so much. We'd ask how to navigate the property, which winds around, and where things were (it wasn't always clear to a non-member). Later, after checking out, staff reported we had a pet and we were charged over $100 again -- that took two calls to fix, since we didn't bring a pet.

My family and I stayed here only one night in February. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. We utilized the restaurant and enjoyed all of our food selections. It was a rainy day so we did not get an opportunity to use the pool and the many outdoor amenities, however, the outdoor courtyard, pool and hot tub area were clean and looked nice. The weather broke and we were able to sit by a fire pit along the marina, which made for an enjoyable and relaxing evening. Overall would recommend for families and would stay here again.

Beautiful place with kind and helpful staff! However after paying a daily resort fee and parking fee on top of the rental for the room you still have to pay expensive separate fees to do the activities the resort offers.

I paid much mo to get there. Received service much less for the money I paid. Old smell in the room, noise drunk people in the middle of the night. Someone in the next room left the phone on the table and it beeped all night. I could get much more in Haytt or Marriot for the money I paid.

We came to San Diego to support some friends in a sailing race. We stayed at the Kona Kai for one night. The front desk person, Jesse, who checked us in, was very disinterested and too efficient. He spoke so quickly in a voice barely audible, that had to repeatedly ask him, "What?" He did not explain the $100 hold on the credit card, or the necessity of a $45 parking charge. He recited the speech he gives for every guest checking into the hotel. We liked the decor of our hotel room. It was clean, colorful and comfortable. The bathroom was not good. The toilet was too small. It was very low and very small. It seemed like it was the same size as the toilets in my first grade classroom bathroom. The bathroom was very big and sparsely decorated, this contrast was comical. I asked to have the $45 resort fee removed because we did not use any of the services dedicated to the resort fee. The front desk check out person said she could not remove the charge. Resort fees seem like pure greed.

Such a beautiful property in a beautiful location. There’s so much to do for the kids and you can walk around shelter island which is an area of San Diego that many people don’t know about. The kids enjoyed playing at the private beach every night next to the bonfires. We truly love this resort

Great location and hotel was nice, but thought it overpriced.. The $40 or $45 dollars to park and the additional resort fee made it quite a bit more than expected. Dinner was very good at the Vessel restaurant. Overall it was nice, just not what I expected for the price.

We stayed for 5 nights and loved everything about Kona Kai Resort. It’s so clean. Our room was cleaned every day. The staff are so friendly and helpful. Beautiful view of the bay and marina. We walked all over Shelter Island and found great food. My only suggestion for improvement would be greater water pressure in the shower. It was always hot but very light pressure. But overall, I’d recommend this resort to anybody! And I suggest Triton catamaran tour if the bay. It was wonderful! And extremely reasonably priced at only $55 per person for almost 2.5 hours on the water.
