Supreme Federal Court

Supreme Federal Court showing a statue or sculpture, a square or plaza and art
Tour the chambers and study the architecture of this futuristic-looking court building on the Three Powers Plaza.

The Supreme Federal Court is an impressive looking civic building in the Three Powers Plaza in the centre of Brasília. Admire the modernist and innovative architecture and then tour the interior of what is the highest court for constitutional issues in Brazil.

The court building was designed by one of Brazil’s most prominent architects, Oscar Niemeyer. It is a rectangular glass structure surrounded by curved white columns that appear to suspend it off the ground. This was one of Niemeyer’s favourite techniques.

Look up at the large Brazilian flag outside the building, which is believed to be the largest flag in the world that is continuously in use. If you are in luck, you may be here for the monthly changing of the flag ceremony, which is officiated by soldiers and occasionally the president of Brazil.

Observe the elegant sculpture known as The Justice outside the court’s main entrance. She is carved from smooth white stone, wears a blindfold and balances a scepter on her lap.

Before going into the court building, stop to appreciate the architecture of the plaza’s other buildings. Study the exterior of the Palácio do Planalto with its similar pillar designs and see the twin towers and domes of the National Congress.

Step inside the Supreme Federal Court to visit its courtrooms during a guided tour. These guided tours take place on the weekends and public holidays and are free.

With its central city location on the Three Powers Plaza, the Supreme Federal Court is easily accessible by bus or metro. While you are in the area, go to some of the other landmark attractions, such as the Cathedral of Brasília, the TV Tower and its gemstone museum and the JK Memorial.

Make a point of coming back to the court building in the evening to view its columns spectacularly lit from below.
