Spier Wine Estate

Spier Wine Estate
Enjoy food, wine and art and experience the majesty of birds of prey at one of the oldest wineries in South Africa.

The vineyards of Spier Wine Estate have been producing wines ever since 1692, making this one of the oldest wine farms in South Africa. Internationally renowned wines may have put Spier on the map, but there's a lot more to see and do in addition to sampling award-winning bouquets. Come to this large estate to discover its hotel, restaurant, art exhibitions, craft market, spa facilities and a birds-of-prey attraction.

Spier Wine Estate benefits from a beautiful location on the banks of the Eerste River with views of the Helderberg Mountains. Explore the scenic landscape by taking the Heritage Walk, which passes through an avenue of coral trees, past art installations and by historical buildings, such as the 1822 Manor House. Follow the River Walk along the south bank of the river. Alternatively, glide through part of the estate on a Segway tour, including a 2-hour trip through vineyards and the River Garden.

Spier Wine Estate's biggest draw is of course the wines. Sample a selection with or without food at the tasting room, located on the banks of the Spier dam. Children can also take part with a grape juice tasting session.

Bring younger visitors to Eagle Encounters, a wildlife conservation and rehabilitation center. Watch falconry displays and a flying owl show and experience close encounters with a host of animals, including eagles, hawks and rabbits.

Peruse the craft market, which operates during the summer months. On sale are contemporary and traditional artworks, including mosaics, beadworks and items made from recycled materials. Purchase fresh pastries, artisanal cheeses and organic seasonal vegetables at the farmers market, held on the last Saturday of every month. Other estate attractions include the hotel’s spa center, restaurants and a bakery and café.

The Spier Wine Estate is located in the Stellenbosch wine-producing region, approximately a 30-minute drive east of Cape Town. Activities and attractions such as wine tastings, Segway tours and Eagle Encounters have separate charges, while others such as the walks are free.
