National Museum of Denmark

National Museum of Denmark featuring interior views
Discover the history of Vikings and royalty and the culture of the Danish nation in this engaging, and free, cultural museum.

Learn about reindeer hunters that inhabited the frozen landscape during the ice age, see clothing from the Middle Ages or hear tales about Denmark’s ruthless ocean warriors, the Vikings, at the fascinating National Museum of Denmark. The free exhibits are targeted for both adults and children, and there’s plenty to see and do for the whole family.

As the country’s largest cultural history centre, the National Museum of Denmark reveals stories from the earliest traces of Danish civilization. The National Museum of Denmark features artifacts, photographs and paintings that date back to 14,000 years.

Begin your visit on the ground floor with the chronological display of Denmark’s ancient history. Discover what a day in the life of the earliest humans in the area was like. See how their legacy carried on through the ages, as hunting and fishing have long been integral to the survival of the Danes.

Once you have the full overview, make your way to the Viking displays, a highlight of the museum. Denmark’s relationship with the sea has always been strong, and the Vikings once ruled the waters between Denmark, England and continental Europe. Learn about the fierce battles they fought and the ships they called home during months at sea.

Move through the museum to see Denmark’s more recent history unfold before your eyes. Interactive displays will keep younger audiences entertained and there is an educational play area for children. All information at the museum is provided in both English and Danish.

The National Museum of Denmark is located in the heart of Copenhagen and can be reached on foot from all downtown hotels. Free bike parking is provided outside, while metered street parking can be found nearby for visitors arriving by car. Copenhagen Central Station is just a short walk away. The National Museum of Denmark is closed Mondays. Admission is free.

My 2019 guidebook said it was free but it isn't. Worth the money, though.
