Es Baluard Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art

Es Baluard featuring outdoor art and art
Built into a 16th-century military fortress, this superb gallery displays works by some of Spain’s greatest artists.

Explore the exceptional Es Baluard gallery to see pieces from renowned painters and sculptors, such as Miró, Barcelo and Picasso. Enjoy landscape paintings from local Mallorcan artists as well. Stand on the outdoor terrace of this former sea defence to take in views over the Bay of Palma.

Es Baluard began as a coastal defence and was part of the Renaissance Wall that surrounded the city of Palma. The robust stone walls date back to the 16th century, but it wasn’t until 2004 that the premises became the famous Es Baluard Gallery.

Make your way to the ground floor to see a selection of paintings of landscapes in Mallorca. Look for pieces from Joaquin Sorolla and Catalan artist Santiago Rusinol, which vividly depict the island’s dramatic, coastal environments. Don’t miss the other room on this floor which is devoted to the works of Catalan artist Joan Miró. Here you will see an exhibition of abstract paintings and sculptures which use bright colours to create weird and wonderful creatures.

Head to the upper level to discover a fantastic collection of ceramics from Pablo Picasso. You will also see fine pieces from Gauguin, Picabia and Motherwell here. Es Baluard hosts various temporary exhibitions throughout the year, so be sure to ask what coincides with your visit.

The gallery features a large terraced area on the first floor where you can enjoy superb sea views. This spot also has an excellent restaurant serving food throughout the day. Once you have finished your meal, browse for souvenirs or prints from the gallery at the small museum shop.

Es Baluard is located in the heart of the old city and is easily accessible either on foot or by public transportation. There is a small admission fee except on Fridays, when you are invited to pay what you want.
