Had to pay for an upgrade of room on arrival as they had allocated me the worst possible room they had without any windows on third floor. They wouldn't give me a receipt for the extra 720 Yuans I paid so it obviously went straight in their pocket. Communication was difficult, but is like that in China generally. About half of the young population in China do speak some English and also have translation aps on their phones. The extra money was only about £60.00 so I was still ok with it. The flights Expedia had booked me on were the worst possible arrival and departure times, consequently I had to spend two nights at the airport due to transport not running through the night.(The first night and the last night in order to be there for my return flight at 7.00am)
The room I eventually had was quite good. A double instead of a single with a bit more space which I appreciated. The security at the hotel is quite good.
All in all for a rock bottom budget holiday it wasn't bad and I would stay there again
The receptionist at the hotel was so nice and she spoke better English than anybody I met during my 10 day stay in Beijing and shanghai. She really was professional, accommodating, and definitely belonged to some fancy 5-star hotel. With that said, I have to write horrible review for the hotel. I chose the hotel because I need to go to muxiyuan fabric market in the neighborhood. I paid little extra thinking I would get the refrigerator, bigger room etc, yet when I get there I realized there is no such thing. You either pay for one single bed, 2 single beds, or 1 big bed. That's how the rooms are priced and there is no extra amenities. Hotel is super old and hallways are so roomy like it used to be a school or hospital or something. Spooky feeling got worse when I entered my room that was so dimly lit. The rooms are dirty and disgusting. Previous guests crushed some bugs and insects everywhere on the wall and everything was so dirty, it is better that the lighting in the room was poor. I thought my air conditioner didn't work since my room was hotter than outside and the receptionist came and fixed it. I think this is the lowest I had ever hit when it comes to cheap hotels. Location is super hard to find as the taxis are always having a hard time finding it and so I just get out of the taxi as soon as I see something similar around the area so taxis don't wonder around. Overall, I learned my lesson, I won't try to save money on hotels anymore.
I would recommend this hotel for budget traveller. However your degree of tolerance would need to be high. Prepare your own tissue paper as no toilet paper was provided. There was a strange smell whenever I entered the room. Some guest might be smoking in other rooms. So you would expect what kind of smell you would get from the centralised conditioning system. The staffs are nice and will try to attend to your request at their best. Overall, an acceptable place for sleeping.
