Bardejov Square showing a garden
Find a cluster of important historic landmarks in and around this cobbled plaza, the focal point of Bardejov’s old town.

Bardejov Square is one of the most attractive features of the fortified medieval town of Bardejov. The appearance of this vast, rectangular plaza hasn’t changed much since the Middle Ages, and encompasses centuries-old buildings, including medieval homes and a 15th-century church.

Walk across the square’s cobbled stones and check out the rows of burgher houses with their steep roofs and colorful flat façades. These medieval buildings surround three sides of the square. See the Gothic and Renaissance elements in their architecture.

Learn about the town's history in the Šariš Museum, part of which is housed in the old town hall. This magnificent building sits in the middle of the square and was constructed at the start of the 16th century. Take your time admiring the Renaissance-era building. Among the noteworthy features are the pitched roofs and stonework.

Inside the iconic landmark is an exhibition documenting Bardejov’s past, featuring religious icons and artwork among other artifacts. The museum’s exhibits are also on display in several burgher houses around the town.

To the north of the square lies the Church of St. Aegidius. Look up at the Baroque statue of St. Florian near its main entrance. Florian is the patron saint of firemen, and the sculpture commemorates the huge fire of 1774 that devastated much of Bardejov. Admire the church’s Gothic exterior then head inside to survey the many examples of religious medieval art, some of which adorn the 11 Gothic wing altars. The top of the church’s tower offers some of the best views of the square and the surrounding area.

Bardejov Square is in Bardejov’s old town, less than a 20-minute walk from Bardejov Station. After your visit, sightsee some of the town center’s other notable attractions. Stroll around the old fortifications and town walls, stretches of which are still intact. Then go to St. John the Baptist Church. This grey stone building was originally constructed in the 15th century.
