We booked five nights at the Hotel Metropolitan in Adelaide in early March 2024, with the expectation that there'd be some noise from the bar downstairs but will have some old charm and character. We didn't mind the sound from the bar, but after checking in we realised there was a high-rise being built literally 30cm from our room. We asked right away if we could switch rooms, but the bar staff (who doubled as reception) said all the rooms were taken (which was clearly a lie as the bathrooms were shared and we only saw/heard a couple people). The construction work started at 5:30/6:00am on some mornings.There was no "reception", all the inquiries were handled by the bar, which wasn't always open and they really didn't know anything other than checking people in. When you check in, they give you a phone number of the maintenance guy, but there was no emergency number or anything else if something happened after the bar closed. The construction noise was so bad it was impossible to have a good rest, so we got another accommodation and left after four nights. We understand the construction next door is out of the control of the hotel, but they should've stated that somewhere as we'd never have booked it if that was the case. Also there was no internet in the room. When we asked for a refund for the only final night via Expedia, the hotel responded simply that the party (us) never checked in! That's how clueless they were.

If you are looking for an artsy down to earth pub and stay with no frills this is it. Staff is super cool, the food is awesome, and the live music is always playing.

The room was spacious and secure. there was a TV that worked well and a table and two chairs that were adequate. However, the carpet through the passages is very dirty and old. The bathroom facilities are only just acceptable because they are old, but they do work and the showers are hot. Overall I would like to give a higher award ranking, but the dirty old and almost threadbare carpet is stopping me from doing so. If the carpets were steam cleaned, maybe the whole place would get the required uplift. In a final word, you only get what you pay for and at $80 per night (for two people), I doubt very much that you could actually get a better place anywhere. For this factor and the security aspect, I would recommend this accommodation to other people. Rob Crombie

The place is in a good location but my room was in obvious disrepair. Window screen had a giant whole in it, rooms had poor ventilation so it was hard to cool it down and bed was incredibly uncomfortable. Would not recommend, I’d rather have stayed in a shared hostel room

Hey, if you want the Ritz, this isn't it, but for a good cheap room with deco chic, then think about the Metro. I can say I really enjoyed my stay. Staff and owners were great and accommodating and it's right in the heart of Adelaide. excellent value for money.

a clean, basic, affordable room for an overnighter in adelaide. friendly, helpful staff. loads of building works round about that started VERY early in the morning (so unwelcome after a late night, but NOT the metropolitan's fault!!)

Sadly the worst place I've stayed that. We booked early and paid for a twin room but they couldn't honour it nor give us a refund for the difference so we were stuck in a single room right next to the loud construction, internet and a fan that didn't work. Didn't help they had live music downstairs past 11pm at night either. Good central location but extremely noisy and uncomfortable stay

The historic building is quaint, floor creaks did not bother me. Check in/out was easy and hotel staff friendly. However, my basic single room was not comfortable at all. Very hot even on a cool night due to poor ventilation and very dim. Furnishings looked like they were out of an opshop and although I did not find any coarse dirt around, the whole room looked very tired and dusty. The bed was crammed in a corner without any bedside table or bedhead. There was a single power point for the whole room and hard to get to. Shared bathroom was clean. With minimal investment this hotel could be refreshed and improved to be such an excellent property given the exciting variety of markets and food venues nearby. Beware loud pub bands on weekend nights until about 11:30pm, which might disappoint guests looking for an early bedtime.

Room was next door to construction site that started work Jack hammering at 7am, no AC, a fan that didn’t work and probably the worst mattress in Australia! Bathroom had mould and a funky smell.

Clean room, clean bathroom, comfy bed and meals right downstairs. The staff are all friendly and were happy to make me a cup of tea at 9pm. The area is right next to Chinatown (food!!!) and also within striking distance of come of the best coffee in Adelaide. I had a great stay. I'll be back!

The location was great as it’s right across the road from a market, & Chinatown with lots of great food options. The room is in an old pub it so comes with history, and character. My only issue really was the extremely squeaky floorboards which were a lil annoying. If you’re just looking for a short term low budget option, didn’t get a chance to try the food downstairs but the beers were cold and free flowing
